Weird and wonderful client cases

Sappi

How to change the way an entire industry operates? When an industry is as established and investment heavy as print paper production, those who dare think differently really stand out.

This is a very small detail of Sappi print papers’ dialogue picture. The picture was used for boosting internal understanding of the desired direction. It was also shared with customers and supply chain partners to build commitment to a shared vision. So so YES!

The way Sappi sales and communications have taken ownership of the picture and run with the elements to continue building the story has been a joy to see.

Sappi & You animation

This series of animation videos was created on top of the Sappi strategy picture. The videos were published on social media, and used to share the vision of a new way of working together within the value chain.

While I created the original illustration and the animation script, we had a cracking team of the client marketing and sales people guiding the content, Animaatiokopla magicians working on the animation from Finland and voiceover artist and sound edit joining in from Portugal.

Detail from a chemical industry dialogue picture

A very small detail from a large dialogue picture, this particular vignette speaks to the impact of currency rate fluctuations, both on sourcing, sales and company results.

This particular dialogue picture was designed to answer the question posed by the managing director: “How can we get all the employees to see their work through EBITDA-improving projects?”

Translated to human: “How do we create a shared understanding of what it is that we do, how we organise to do it, and how does each individual help build the whole?”

This project was joint work with the highly perceptive and skilled Torsten Weber of Bridging People & Ideas.

Fairytale calendar

Once upon a time, a client wanted to boost the employee learning from a very technically oriented customer service training that just was not translating into actions.

In the concepting process we agreed we wanted material that was fun, insightful and, naturally, visible.

It was obvious the problem was not lack of knowledge, as everyone had already participated in the training. To get beyond the “I already know that stuff”-barrier, I rewrote 12 classic fairytales from customer service perspective. These 12 customer service fairytales were brought together into a calendar, complete with fairytale illustrations.

The fairytale wall calendar was then hung in the back room of each shop, where it was visible and discussable, every day.

Environmental cartoon series

In a very large strategy illustration that was teeming with Highly Important Business Things, one very small polar bear was enjoying a slide down a snowy mountain side.

This little polar bear became the star of a series of environmental cartoons in the internal magazine. He adventured around the world, got into all sorts of trouble, and got to take part in a number of environmental initiatives my client company was taking at the time. Of course, he would take part in the initiatives in the way that a teenaged polar bear would: with a lusty focus on food.

Sappi & You advent calendar

For holiday season, Sappi treated its customers to a chocolate advent calendar. You may well ask what that has to do with strategy illustration. Lots, when the advent calendar shows the characters from the strategy picture coming together in festive spirit.

It would have been nice to share with you an untampered calendar, just for the sake of clarity. However, it seemed like a silly waste to let the Lindt chocolates go bad…

Strategy calendar showcases a strategic issue each month

How to bring strategic issues into the ordinary working day? When people still used a paper calendar, it was a handy platform for hightlighting one strategic topic each month. We had developed characters that were not depictions of actual individuals, but the two sides within each of us: the positive force and the pessimist that questions new things.

The calendar was a chronicle of the characters’ exploits in the world of business strategy, and most importantly, the dialogue between them.

This is a communication about attitudes and behaviours in a way that leaves room for individual insight.

Työmaapalvelut Express
Distillery -workshop

Together with my brilliant friend, Paula Viinamäki, we ran a 5-day Distillery -workshop for Työmaapalvelut Express.

Työmaapalvelut Express is a fast-growing construction logistics company, who are intent on solving the costly and time-consuming puzzle of all large construction sites: how to get the right stuff to the right place, at the right time and into the hands of the right people, safely. Their service is an effective combination of digital and hands-on service.

Over the 5 days, we helped them clarify both their vision and strategy, and kick off very concrete steps to set up their new workflow. At the end, clients and network partners were brought in to verify the outcomes.
